• Princeton Symphony Orchestra "Listen Up":  Eternal Light
    2/11/14

Congratulations to Aurelle Sprout, Whitney Stanek, Arlene Milgram, and Julie Brenner for their students’ incredible work in the Princeton Symphony Orchestra’s Listen Up Program.  On November 3rd, these teachers took  some of their students to hear a concert by the Princeton Symphony Orchestra called “Eternal Light.”

At this concert, the students engaged in a close listening of a cello concerto by Aaron Jay Kernis entitled “Colored Field.”  Kernis wrote this piece following a tour of the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps.  His piece is a reflection on good and evil and the human experience.  Our students then created visual and written artistic responses to the music.

These works were on display at the Princeton Arts Council in a gallery showing.  Their work is an extremely moving display of their emotional understanding of this very difficult topic.  This is an incredible demonstration of how the visual arts, creative writing, and music can bring an entirely new level of understanding to some of the most important events in human history.
