Welcome to 5th Grade Computer Applications
By the fifth grade students need to demonstrate mastery of a suite of tools allowing them to research, collaborate, and design. Building on the K-4 curriculum, students will be given the opportunity to explore advanced features of an online suite of design & collaboration tools. Through the lens of “Digital Citizenship” student will create a digital portfolio demonstrating both their understanding of a variety of tools and their knowledge of internet “best practices”.We begin the course with a discussion on what it means to be a "good" digital citizen. Digital citizenship refers to the new codes of conduct we all must adopt to be safe, responsible, and respectful participants in today's digitally connected culture. One great way to get students thinking critically about digital citizenship is to permit them to learn and practice new skills in a safe environment. Students will be working on Edmodo, a controlled and monitored social learning network to develop competencies that will help them stay safe online. Each student signs a digital citizens pledge welcoming them to be an active member of our classroom social network.
From here, we turn our focus to digital publishing tools and cloud technology by "going Google". Google Drive is cloud based technology that can be accessed from any device on the web. Google drive allows for files to be shared more easily on the internet. There are a number of security measures which must be followed when using Google Drive. The goal is for students to be comfortable using digital tools to explore, connect, create, and learn in a safe and productive way. Finally, we will explore the power of digital media to explore, connect, create, and learn in ways never available before today’s technology. Creating a project with a new multimedia tool can help students learn both the content of the lesson material, and the skills required to use a multimedia software tool. This course will give students an introduction to multimedia presentation publishing which can be explored deeper as they move on with their skill development.
