•  Design Challenge Basics...

Every new invention or design can be viewed as a challenge or problem and your job as a designer is to find the best solution to the challenge/problem. There is no "right" or "wrong" answer in the world of design!

The following is a list of design challenge basics that you will need to understand before we begin our project unit for the cycle...

Design Brief: This explains the reason you are making this design. Almost like a little story or scenario for the challenge. Why does this solution need to be created? Who is going to use it? What does it need to be able to do? What should it look like?

Problem Statement: This is one sentence that sums up the overall objective of the design challenge.

Design Specifications: This is a list of requirements or guidelines for the design. Some examples would be size, weight, load, speed, distance, or duration of time.

Materials List: This is a list of what materials you are allowed to use in building the solution.

Testing Method: Before designing you need to understand how the project will ultimately be tested for success when you are done. For all STEAM design challenges there will be a scoring rubric that is used for assessment.

Now you will be prepared for starting design challenges!
