Primary grades Physical Education is taught for three forty minute periods per week, for boys and girls in grades one, two and three. Kindergarten students receive physical education for one twenty minute period every other week. This course, taught by primary physical education specialists has as its essence a theme of basic movement exploration.

Basic movement exploration is a foundational structure and process portion of physical education which is characterized by the experimental study of

    •     time, space, force and flow as the elements of movement
    •   the physical laws of motion and the principles of human movement which govern the human body’s movement, and
    •      the vast variety of creative and efficient movements which the human body is capable of procuring through manipulation of movement variables.

In addition, the Physical Education program is implemented in such a way as to develop:

    • an individual with a positive self-image
    • attitudes of sportsmanship, cooperation and positive social interaction
    • gross motor and fine motor skills
    • problem solving skills
    • cardiopulmonary, cardiovascular and muscular strength and endurance

Through activities and games conducted in an atmosphere that encourages participation in primarily non-competitive situations.District goals, outlined by the Board of Education, are used in applicable activities and identified whenever possible.

Currently, games and skills of other cultures throughout the world are researched and incorporated in classes from kindergarten through the third grade.
