MTSD Gifted Services: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

    • What is the process the district uses to determine whether a student should be placed in the Voyagers/Expeditions program?
      • 3 or more common data points were identified and used to calculate a cumulative score at each grade level.
    • How can my child be reevaluated for the Voyagers/ Expeditions Programs if they were not placed in the program this year?
      • Please see the appeals process page if you feel that your student should be reconsidered for the program.  During this process, you will be asked to write a narrative about your child as well as to share any additional information that you think may help inform the district.  Additionally,  the district will establish regular intervals for student evaluation to both enter and exit the program.
    • Is the Voyagers/Expedition Program an academic acceleration program?
      • Academic acceleration is the role of the classroom teacher. The Voyagers/Expedition Program is designed to help students develop their potential cognitive abilities through critical thinking, problem-solving, and design thinking experiences.
    • What do students miss while at the Voyagers/Expeditions Program?
      • Students will miss an academic class or academic portion of class while participating in the program.  Classroom teachers will work with the students to only have them make up what is necessary in order to be ready for the next day or the next lesson.  Parents should reach out to the classroom with any questions regarding missing work.
    • What is the CogAT?
      • The CogAT seeks to measure abilities across systems that are most highly correlated with reasoning, problem-solving, and success in school. There is no reason for a child to study for this test, as it measures abilities not directly taught in the classroom.  Our students in grades 1-8 take the complete battery, including a Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal Reasoning battery.
    • What is the process to address questions, concerns, or appeals?
      • Please contact your student's building administration with any questions regarding the Voyagers/Expeditions Program.  They will be able to help direct you to any additional individual that may be needed to provide you with a complete answer.
