    Unit 2 objectives

    Unit 2 Notes

    2.   Demonstration/discussion: diffusion of liquids in hot and cold liquids.  Prepare a storyboard contrasting the arrangement and behavior of the particles in hot and cold water diffusion.

Student Reading: Brownian Motion and Atomic Theory

    3.   Observe the three states of matter and relate observations of rigidity vs fluidity and density differences to the arrangement and behavior of matter particles. Eureka videos 16-17

    4.   Define temperature, Eureka videos 4 – 5, demo on thermal expansion of liquids, explanation of how a thermometer works, worksheet 1 – temperature and motion of molecules.

     Eureka video 19,20,21

    5.   Notes on pressure and how devices can measure pressure

Student Reading: Evangelista Torricelli: The Invention of the Barometer http://www.juliantrubin.com/bigten/torricellibarometer.html

    7.   PVT lab – part 1: P vs V, PVT lab – part 2: P vs n

    8.   PVT lab – part 3: P vs T, discussion on laws

    Student Reading: Absolute Zero

    http://physics-history.suite101.com/article.cfm/absolute_zero

    9.   Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT); how theories differ from laws

Student Reading: Ideas in Science: Theories, Hypotheses, and Laws
    http://www.visionlearning.com/library/module_viewer.php?mid=177

Try the KMT simulator at the PHET site, to see how the experimentally determined relationships between P, V, number of particles, and T which we've determined experimentally, can be used to support a particle theory of matter.  We include in this model the understanding that particles have mass, and kinetic energy.  We suppose that most of the volume of a gas is the space between particles, not the particles themselves.  Particles are in random motion, and exchange energy through elastic collisions.
Read chapter 13.1 in your textbook for a more thorough review of kinetic molecular theory.

The chemteam.info site includes additional (optional) readings, problem sets and tutorials.  Even though these are optional, you may benefit by looking through a few of the sample problems!
    Chemteam.info on gas relationships.

Ever wonder how a drinking straw works?  This entertaining video explains, and may also be useful review (most students have seen this in class).
